Course Description, Learning Objectives, Schedule

Program Abstract/ Program Description

Treating America's Heroes, Part 1:  EMDR Therapy with Military, Police, and Fire is available to those who have completed an EMDRIA-approved EMDR Basic Training program as an advanced course for EMDRIA and professional/licensing CEs.

This advanced course introduces the population of military, police, and fire personnel to EMDR therapy clinicians interested in working with this population.  Clinicians are equipped to recognize characteristics of military and first responder culture and risk factors.  This workshop offers specialized adaptations and AIP considerations for this population who see and must respond to horrific events--those who do not hesitate to put their lives at risk but who may endure a variety of traumatic events because of their occupation.

EMDR therapy is a very successful therapeutic modality for working with this special population. This course is designed to prepare clinicians to work effectively with military personnel, both active duty and veterans as well as police and firefighters. This population is often reticent to come to therapy, yet the need is substantial. This advanced training is the Part 1 of preparing clinicians to work efficaciously with these populations and is intended to expand knowledge and practice of EMDR therapy.

Learn how to:

  • Identify client readiness for therapy for this population who are reticent to seek help and apply learned concepts of the culture of this population to gain “buy in” and increase therapeutic rapport.
  • Recognize risk factors in this special population that contribute to the level of mental health concerns and suicide rates and other ramifications of service.
  • Recognize and manage dissociation, common “stuck” places while in preprocessing phases and common adaptations.

EMDR therapy with military, police and fire encompasses the adaptations for the 8 phase, 3 prong approach and AIP considerations. The course includes examples of ways clients show up to therapy and under what conditions. Recognize and manage the unique defense structures of “it’s the job” and other defenses that prevent clients from accepting that they are as important as those they protect rescue and serve. Within the course, clinicians learn to distinguish which issues on treatment planning are going to be the most efficacious to keep clients engaged and learn to assist clients in building internal and external supports, create resourcing techniques to manage strong emotions and dissociation in between and in sessions. The course includes demonstrated adaptations, giving examples of real life cases for a comprehensive understanding of the deeper meaning of exposure to horrific experiences, as military, police, and firefighters put their lives at risk, and the deep-rooted consequences that accompany the vocation of serving the community or the country, maintaining law, order, and freedom.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Recall at least two cultural attributes and defenses of the military, police, and fire populations.
  2. Recognize at least two risk factors in this special population that contribute to the level of mental health concerns and suicide rates and other ramifications of service.
  3. Recognize and manage dissociation, common "stuck" places, and keeping within the window of tolerance.
  4. Recall at least two adaptations and AIP considerations of EMDR therapy for the military, police, and fire populations.
  5. Recognize the attributes of PTSD and Complex PTSD as they relate to first responder and military culture.
  6. Describe the internal and external support process and recognize resourcing techniques to manage strong emotions and dissociation between and in sessions.
