Instructor: Deborah Silveria, Ph.D.


Deborah Silveria, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist and LMFT. She works at the Amen Clinics in Costa Mesa, California where she specializes in complex trauma. She has been practicing EMDR since 1996 and has traveled to areas providing EMDR after disasters (Haiti, San Bernardino terrorist attacks). Dr. Silveria is a Trainer for EMDR Trauma Recovery Network and a facilitator for the EMDR Institute. She is also an Approved Instructor in Critical Incident Stress Management for the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation. She is the EMDR consultant and program coordinator for a week-long retreat for first responders with PTSD.

Program Abstract/ Program Description 

Suicide:  Assessment, Intervention, and Prevention--Skills and Resources to Stop the Pain is available to all mental health professionals.  Those who have completed an EMDRIA-approved EMDR Basic Training program are also eligible to receive EMDRIA CEs.

This course is an informative and practical training covering the demographics of suicide, including behaviors, tools for suicide risk assessment, and theories and the standard of care with an inclusion of how EMDR Therapy can be used, for those who are EMDR clinicians.  Within the course, participants learn coping strategies to reduce the emotional impact of working with suicidal clients to prevent vicarious trauma and will learn strategies to minimize the risk of lawsuits and provide for safety planning.  Dr. Silveria also discusses suicidal behaviors from a multi-cultural lens to provide culturally sensitive interventions to suicidal patients.  Finally, telehealth strategies when working with suicidal clients are discussed.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: 

  1. Recall at least one part of the demographics of suicide.
  2. Identify at least one warning sign for suicide and tools for suicide risk assessment.
  3. Identify at least two major theories of suicide and identify treatments and incorporation of EMDR therapy that meet the standard of care.
  4. Describe suicidal behaviors from a multi-cultural lens to provide culturally sensitive interventions to suicidal patients.
  5. Identify at least two coping strategies for clinicians to reduce the emotional impact of working with suicidal clients to prevent vicarious trauma.
  6. Identify at least two strategies to minimize risk of lawsuits/safety planning.
  7. Recall at least one resource for practitioners and suicidal clients.
  8. Identify at least one effective telehealth strategy when working with suicidal clients.

Eligibility

This course is open to all mental health professionals and fulfills the California BBS requirement.

This course is also available as an advanced course for EMDR therapy clinicians.  To be eligible for EMDRIA CEs, participants should successfully complete an EMDRIA approved EMDR Basic Training program.
