Program Description
An introductory workshop for fully trained EMDR clinicians to learn addiction-focused protocols and conceptualize when and how these protocols might be used. The workshop also introduces integrating IFS (Internal Family Systems) informed parts work and why it is recommended within the 8 phases of EMDR to increase safety, stabilization, and relapse prevention. This live webinar includes clinical examples, videos, and a Q & A portion to highlight concepts.
Abstract
Part 1, presented by Hope Payson, explores the use of the more commonly used addiction protocols and how they can be used within a comprehensive or symptom focused EMDR therapy treatment plan. The protocols are reviewed, along with some guidance on how to use them to address and desensitize triggers, urges, cravings, avoidance defenses and the “positive feeling states” associated with a variety of addictive behaviors. Teaching points are highlighted with clinical examples, video clips and open discussion.
Part 2, presented by Susan Brown, describes the basic concepts of IFS (Internal Family Systems), a trauma informed ego state approach and introduce the integration of IFS informed, parts work within the 8 phases of EMDR therapy. The integration focuses on safety and stabilization throughout phases and the importance of learning about a client’s internal system before proceeding to reprocess deep trauma. The workshop includes a demonstration showing how to identify and gain permission from Protector parts to access those deep dives into trauma and attachment wounds without triggering danger to the client or unnecessary relapse. Clinical examples, videos and open Q&A are offered to highlight these concepts.
Course Objectives
Upon completing this course, participants will be able to:
1. Describe at least 2 Addiction Protocols.
2. Describe when the use of Addiction Protocols would be appropriate.
3. Identify at least 3 reasons why integrating parts work within EMDR therapy is recommended.
4. Explain the IFS process for gaining permission from protectors before accessing trauma and attachment wounds.
