This advanced training provides a comprehensive approach to Early EMDR Intervention. This course is Day 1 -- RTEP (Recent Trauma Episode Protocol)for individuals. The RTEP protocol is highly effective in integrating and reprocessing recent traumas as well as building resilience during ongoing traumatic events.

The RTEP Protocol is easily adapted to Tele-behavioral Health, particularly in emphasizing containment and safety. Given the myriad of ways the COVID-19 pandemic created trauma individually and within communities throughout the world, the protocol is particularly useful and timely.

RTEP is effective in: Non-recent trauma, Abuse, Grief and traumatic loss, Pet loss, Job loss, Young professionals presenting with anxiety, Domestic & workplace violence, Sexual violence survivors, Traumatic accidents, First responders, Divorce, Complex trauma, Health challenges such as COVID, cancer, cardiac, and other Reproductive related trauma, Depression and sleep disorders.

Instructor: Deborah Silveria, PhD

Deborah Silveria, PhD, is a licensed psychologist and LMFT, an EMDR consultant, and EMDR therapy trainer.  She works at the Amen Clinics in Costa Mesa, California, where she specializes in complex trauma. Practicing EMDR therapy since 1996, Silveria has traveled to areas providing EMDR after disasters (Haiti, San Bernardino terrorist attacks).  Dr. Silveria is a Trainer for EMDR Trauma Recovery Network and a facilitator for the EMDR Institute, and now trains in both basic and advanced courses for EMDR Professional Training. She is also an Approved Instructor in Critical Incident Stress Management for the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation. She is the EMDR consultant and program coordinator for a week-long retreat for first responders with PTSD.

Program Abstract/ Program Description 

The Recent Traumatic Episode Protocol (R-TEP) is part of a comprehensive approach to Early EMDR Intervention (EEI). This workshop incorporates and extends existing protocols within a new conceptual framework, together with additional measures for containment and safety. Checking for sub-clinical sticking points which can obstruct Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) and don’t necessarily show up on the DSM radar, the R-TEP may reduce sensitization and accumulation of trauma memories.

Workshop participants learn how to apply EMDR for early intervention in emergent trauma situations, providing the practitioner with detailed information regarding the Recent Traumatic Episode Protocol. Participants will identify and apply key features, procedures, and concepts of R-TEP and demonstrate its use through practicum within the workshop setting. Participants will learn how to adapt the protocol for online tele-health formats.

Course Objectives

This course will provide the practitioner with detailed information regarding the Recent Traumatic Episode Protocol. Specifically, through lecture, discussion, video clips, and practicum experiences, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify when Early EMDR Intervention is appropriate.
  2. Compare the EMDR standard protocol and EMDR R-TEP protocol.
  3. Demonstrate early intervention EMDR clinical skills with additional measures for containment and safety.
  4. Describe EMD, EMDr, EMDR and how each is applied.
  5. Identify at least two key features and concepts for early intervention and the R-TEP protocol.
  6. Demonstrate key procedures for early intervention R-TEP.

This course is considered an advanced course for EMDR therapy clinicians.  Before enrolling in this course, participants should successfully complete an EMDRIA approved EMDR Basic Training program.
