EMDR and the Art of Psychotherapy with Children focuses on skills in applying EMDR therapy with children. This course is for fully trained practitioners of EMDR therapy. Language of the eight phases of EMDR therapy is modified to meet a child’s developmental needs. Participants learn to create a comprehensive treatment plan and create child-oriented methods for resourcing and stabilization skills along with Cognitive and Motor Interweaves. Instructor: Robbie Adler-Tapia, Ph.D.


Robbie Adler-Tapia, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist in Tempe, Arizona, where she works with children and families encountering trauma, attachment challenges, adoption, and child welfare issues. She also works with adults with trauma histories, as well as law enforcement, fire fighters, and emergency personnel.  Forensically, Dr. Adler-Tapia serves as an expert witness in the Juvenile and Family Courts.


Dr. Adler-Tapia is a national and international speaker, has presented at EMDRIA conferences and the EMDR Europe Conference, at the ISST-D Conference on EMDR & Dissociation in children, at the Infant Toddler Mental Health Coalition of Arizona Conference on dissociation in infants and toddlers 0-3 years, and has presented many workshops on EMDR therapy, trauma, attachment, and dissociation.  She is also an EMDRIA-Approved Consultant.


With Carolyn Settle, MSW, Robbie co-authored the book and treatment manual, EMDR and the Art of Psychotherapy with Children and has written many workbooks with her daughter including My EMDR Workbook, I’m a KKIC (Kids Kicking Cancer), and I Live in a Foster Home. Her latest book, Child Psychotherapy: Integrating Developmental Theory into Clinical Practice focuses on developmentally grounded treatment including EMDR Therapy.

COURSE DESCRIPTION


EMDR and the Art of Psychotherapy with Children focuses on skills in applying EMDR therapy with children.  This course is for fully trained practitioners of EMDR therapy.  Language of the eight phases of EMDR therapy is modified to meet a child’s developmental needs.  Participants learn to create a comprehensive treatment plan and create child-oriented methods for use in EMDR therapy.  Complex cases and special topic areas are also discussed. 


EMDR and the Art of Psychotherapy with Children is an advanced training with Robbie Adler-Tapia, Ph.D.  Now an OnDemand course, this course is for intermediate practitioners of EMDR Therapy.  Full EMDR Basic Training required.
Based on the book and treatment manual of the same name, this informational workshop focuses on basic and advanced skills in adhering to EMDR therapy with children. Dr. Adler-Tapia presents case conceptualization through the lens of the Adaptive Information Processing Theory (AIP).  She explains how to modify the language of EMDR therapy to meet the child’s developmental needs and how to specifically apply the eight phases with children.  Participants of this informational workshop learn how to develop a comprehensive treatment plan and create child-oriented methods for use of EMDR therapy.
Discussion of child development theory as it applies to the AIP theory is also included.  Dr. Adler-Tapia also covers how to use EMDR therapy in complex cases with a variety of special topic areas including ADHD, giftedness, attachment, dissociation, and sexual reactivity.  


COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1.  Explain the AIP Model as applied to children.
2.  Explain the 8 phases of EMDR therapy with goals, objectives, and procedural steps.
3.  Demonstrate child “languaging” for the 8 phases of EMDR therapy.
4.  Recall child-oriented methods for use of EMDR therapy.
5.  Distinguish concepts in a treatment plan.
6.  Describe the concept of “launching targets into the future.”
7.  Explain the stages of child development through the lens of the AIP Model.
8.  Describe the use of EMDR therapy in complex cases in specialty areas with diagnoses
of ADHD, Giftedness, OCD, Attachment, Sexual Reactivity, and Dissociation.
9.  Identify at least two concepts of EMDR therapy with children and families in the child welfare system.
10. Develop child-oriented methods for target identification and organization to create a treatment plan.
