Program Abstract/ Program Description
This training focuses on how Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) can support EMDR Therapy, allowing a client’s internal system support the healing process. Part 1 of the training provides practical strategies for incorporating IFS into EMDR Therapy. The course covers the basic tenets and concepts of IFS as well as the how and where in EMDR these interventions can interconnect, focusing on 3 phases of EMDR: History Taking, Preparation and Desensitization. In Phase 1, History Taking, participants explore how to incorporate IFS language and concepts into the initial stages of therapy. In Phase 2, Preparation, participants identify how to assist clients to understand and befriend their protective parts. These protective parts play an integral role when processing traumatic memories. In Phase 4, Desensitization, the training outlines specific IFS interweaves that supports the re-consolidation of memories more effectively.
Part 2 of this training further expands ways to integrate IFS and EMDR, specifically focused on expanding the role, motivation and fears of protective parts. In IFS, this is called Discovery. Through the Discovery interactions, clients will develop a stronger benevolent relationship with their protective parts, allowing for the client to have more self-agency and feel more empowered in the therapeutic process. Participants will learn how Discovery assists in stabilization with complex trauma clients. The training will further teach strategies for "Unblending" in order to better work with a particular protector. The training will provide an EMD protocol for working with protective parts’ fears. These strategies will allow the desensitizing phase of EMDR to move more effectively and decrease negative responses to unprocessed or incomplete processing of Targets. Participants will also gain more understanding of the relationship between blocking beliefs and protective parts, enhancing the use of cognitive interweaves. Through didactic, demonstration, and practice sessions, participants will experience their own internal system and gain skills in working with their clients’ systems.
