Instructor: Deborah Silveria, PhD


Deborah Silveria, PhD, is a licensed psychologist and LMFT, an EMDR consultant, and EMDR therapy trainer.  She works at the Amen Clinics in Costa Mesa, California, where she specializes in complex trauma. Practicing EMDR therapy since 1996, Silveria has traveled to areas providing EMDR after disasters (Haiti, San Bernardino terrorist attacks).  Dr. Silveria is a Trainer for EMDR Professional Training in both basic and advanced courses and is also a Trainer for EMDR Trauma Recovery Network. She is also an Approved Instructor in Critical Incident Stress Management for the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation. She is the EMDR consultant and program coordinator for a week-long retreat for first responders with PTSD.

Program Abstract/ Program Description 

Grief, Loss, and EMDR Therapy is an advanced course for those who have completed an EMDRIA-approved EMDR Basic Training program.  In this beginning level advanced course, Dr. Deborah Silveria covers the components and theories of grief and mourning, including the DSM-5 versus ICD 11, psychological and physiological factors, and how EMDR therapy can be used.  This course also covers cultural considerations, working with grief in children, and strategies to build vicarious resilience.   

Course Objectives

Upon completing this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain three major theories of grief.
  2. Describe two ways to incorporate cultural/social identity issues in treatment planning for a grieving client.
  3. Identify three psychological and physiological factors contributing to grief and mourning.
  4. Recognize three possible targets--past, present and future--that are often useful in grief work.
  5. Describe three interventions (coping skills) to build resilience in Phase 2 and throughout the Phases for working with clients with Grief and Loss.
  6. Explain two cognitive interweaves for working with grief and loss.
  7. Recognize two Blocking Beliefs often found in Grief and Loss.
  8. Describe two strategies for building resilience.

This course is considered an advanced course for EMDR therapy clinicians.  Before enrolling in this course, participants should successfully complete an EMDRIA approved EMDR Basic Training program.
