Instructor: Kelly Hurley, LPC

Kelly Hurley, LPC is a Counselor in private practice in Phoenix, AZ. She started her career in the mental health field in 2003. Right from the beginning, Kelly was trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) working with highly suicidal and self-harming clients. She completed a 1 year study/experience program in DBT in 2005.  Then, in 2008, she attended a 2-week Behavioral Tech, LLC Intensive DBT Training with Dr. Marsha Linehan's training organization. She worked in community mental health settings & participated in DBT Consultation Teams for 14 years, leading them for 8 of those years. Kelly is a Clinical Supervisor in Arizona—and led the training program at her agency. She has trained & supervised many clinicians in DBT.

Kelly realized during her work with people with Borderline Personality Disorder that training in the treatment of Complex PTSD / Trauma was needed in order to help her clients use DBT skills and fully create a "life worth living." She was trained in EMDR Therapy in 2009 and has used that ever since. She worked in community mental health for 14 years prior to starting her private practice in 2017; she is a Clinical Supervisor and loves mentoring others. Kelly is an EMDRIA Certified Therapist, an EMDRIA Approved Consultant, and EMDR Approved Trainer for EMDR Professional Training in both basic and advanced courses. She also provides Facilitation for EMDR-HAP Trainings. Kelly specializes in working with clients who dissociate, experience OCD and panic. She also is trained in DeTUR and Feeling State Addiction Protocol (FSAP)—as well as other advanced trainings.

Program Abstract/ Program Description

Mastering Emotional Resilience... is an advanced course for fully trained EMDR Therapy clinicians who would like to blend EMDR Therapy with Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills to foster emotional stability in their clients. This course offers innovative strategies for working with individuals struggling with safety concerns, connection issues, and profound emptiness—often manifesting as fears of abandonment and interpersonal instability. This course enhances the clinician’s therapeutic approach by integrating DBT principles and skills with Phases 1 & 2 of EMDR Therapy, creating a robust framework for clients who find traditional trauma work challenging.

Part 1: History Taking and Trauma-Informed Assessment

Explore advanced techniques for:

  • Conducting comprehensive trauma history assessments
  • Addressing diverse coping behaviors, including impulsive actions
  • Developing strategies to manage challenging behaviors for both client and clinician

Part 2: Preparation, Resourcing, and Stabilization

Discover methods to:

  • Merge EMDR Therapy with DBT skills for enhanced stabilization
  • Develop emotional management strategies for unstable periods
  • Foster client resilience through incremental progress
  • Build a solid foundation for Phases 3-6 of trauma work

This course equips clinicians with the tools to make informed clinical decisions, including how and when to initiate deeper trauma work and which of the three prongs (past, present, or future) to prioritize for each client.  It transforms EMDR therapy practice, providing more effective, tailored care for clients with complex trauma histories.

Course Objectives

Upon completing this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Recall at least 3 core principles of EMDR Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), articulating their complementary roles in treating trauma and emotional dysregulation.
  2. Describe an integrated approach to EMDR Phase 1 (History Taking) by incorporating DBT principles and protocols, demonstrating the ability to conduct a comprehensive, trauma-informed assessment that addresses both past experiences and current coping mechanisms.
  3. Describe EMDR Phase 2 (Preparation and Resourcing) interventions that seamlessly incorporate DBT skills modules, enhancing client stability and emotional regulation capacities.
  4. Recognize an appropriate personalized treatment plan that strategically utilizes the three prongs of EMDR Therapy (past, present, future), tailored to each client's unique needs and readiness for trauma processing.
  5. Recognize client progress and treatment efficacy using both EMDR and DBT frameworks, making decisions to adjust interventions and promote sustainable emotional resilience.
