Advanced Training!
Program Abstract/ Program Description
Advanced training for mental health professionals working in community health. Explore all eight phases of EMDR therapy for complex clients, including multiple maladaptive memory networks, stabilizing clients who may never have known safety, and reprocessing within the individual’s capacity. The training also addresses practitioner self-care to sustain this demanding work.
Course Abstract:
So often, clients seeking care through community mental health agencies are amongst the most impacted by trauma amongst us. Complex trauma histories, comorbid diagnoses, limited windows of tolerance, and ongoing instability require EMDR practitioners to bring clinical sophistication, attunement, and flexibility to every stage of treatment. This training guides participants through all eight phases of EMDR practice with high-complexity community mental health clients.
By the end of this training, attendees will develop a framework for conceptualizing these cases using the AIP model to guide intentional client selection and treatment planning. Using Bronfenbrenner’s Social Ecological Theory, participants will also learn how various social structures impact clients’ functioning. Various strategies to determine whether a client is ready to begin reprocessing will be discussed. Participants will develop new skills in target identification and Phase 3 Assessment for clients with complex trauma history. Participants will enhance their ability to appropriately prepare clients for reprocessing, including when it is time to begin that next phase of work. Finally, proper closure and reassessment considerations for community mental health clients are reviewed. Special vignettes are set across challenging topics that might emerge in community mental health agencies.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
Explain how to conceptualize complex cases using the AIP model.
Identify at least one strategy to determine when it is appropriate to start reprocessing with complex clients.
Identify at least two ways in which they can modify reprocessing for clients experiencing abreactions.
