Instructor: Kristen Garubba, EdD, LMFT

Kristen Garubba, Ed.D., LMFT, was trained by Dr. A.J. Popky to become a DeTUR trainer, working with all of the nuances of his specific steps and interweaves.  With Kristen’s training and experience, A.J. Popky’s legacy remains intact and the excellent results of the DeTUR protocol will continue.

Dr. Garubba works with a variety of populations, taking special interest in trauma, substance abuse, depression, anxiety, and family relational issues. Her experience includes work within the non-profit sector, county crisis residential programs, victims of crime, residential substance abuse, and mental health program participants.  Dr. Garubba has also served as a clinical director and supervisor within substance abuse and private practice settings.

Kristen uses a variety of treatment approaches, including CBT, psychoeducation, motivational interviewing, and EMDR therapy with related specialty interventions including RTEP and DeTUR.  She now takes the role of training others in DeTUR, having been trained in the protocol by A.J. Popky, Ph.D.

Currently, Dr. Garubba owns and operates her private practice in San Juan Capistrano, California, providing individual, couples, and family therapy.  She is also an adjunct professor at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology and at California State University, Fullerton where she teaches graduate level courses.  She also serves in a supervisory capacity for psychotherapists who are new to the profession.  Kristen brings with her long-standing experience in the field and holds a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and Doctorate in Educational and Counseling Psychology both from Argosy University.

Dr. Garubba’s Theory on Healing and Wellness:

“We are all capable of change and healing. We are not sick, broken, or damaged as many might believe. We are but a product of the world in which we are raised. As a healer in the mental health field, it is my job to find ways to aid my patients in finding a path to healing through education, caring, and coping skills. We learn in EMDR therapy that many issues such as depression, anxiety, and trauma are a direct result of adverse life events. Healing is possible through understanding the impact of those events and taking steps to achieve a sense of well being.” - Kristen Garubba Ed.D., LMFT

The Work and Legacy of Arnold J. Popky, Ph.D.

At EMDR Professional Training, we honor the work and legacy of A.J. Popky, Ph.D., by continuing to offer training in his ground-breaking protocol.

Arnold (AJ) Popky, Ph.D., was instrumental in the founding of the EMDR Institute with Francine Shapiro and Robbie Dunton. As a specialist in PTSD and addiction, Dr. Popky developed the DeTUR AAIP urge protocol for addictions and dysfunctional behaviors, which he also presented in workshops and conferences internationally.  A charter member of the Marine Corps League DIV. 1277, Dr. Popky was affiliated with Re-Boot Resort Camp working with military veterans.  He also trained and consulted to DoD therapists at military bases around the globe, along with several drug rehabilitation centers.

Dr. Popky’s work can be found in EMDR Solutions by Robin Shapiro, Ph.D., EMDR Tool Box by Jim Knipe, Ph.D., and in Scripted Protocols by Marilyn Luber, Ph.D.

Course Description, Learning Objectives, and Schedule

Program Description
Kristen Garubba, EdD, LMFT, demonstrates DeTUR, an Urge Reduction Protocol for addictions and dysfunctional behaviors using the Accelerated Adaptive Information Processing Model which was developed by Arnold “AJ” Popky, PhD. During the workshop, participants practice DeTUR phases including client empowerment through resource accessing, installation of positive treatment goals, identification and desensitization of triggers, and techniques of relapse prevention.

Abstract
DeTUR (Desensitization of Triggers and Urge Reprocessing) is an urge reduction protocol used as the nucleus of an overall methodology in the treatment of a wide range of chemical addictions and dysfunctional behaviors. This method was developed and refined by AJ Popky, Ph.D., through actual client interaction and feedback from other EMDR trained therapists using the same protocol. It was initially introduced as a “stop smoking” protocol at the first EMDR conference in 1992.

This eclectic addiction treatment method is trauma based, combining client internal resources with external support including the 12-step model and other known and proven treatment methods as cognitive behavioral therapy, solution focused, Erickson, thought field therapy, Satire, neuro linguistic programming.  The basis or foundation is the accelerated information processing using bi-lateral processing as outlined in EMDR to uncover and process the base trauma(s) or core issues as the underlying cause behind the addiction.

Though somewhat similar to the phases of EMDR, using history, assessment, diagnosis and preparation of the client. DeTUR targets the triggers that bring up the uncomfortable feelings leading to the urges. DeTUR phases also include client empowerment through resource accessing, installation of positive treatment goals, identification and desensitization of triggers, and techniques of relapse prevention. The purpose of the protocol is to uncover the core traumas and reprocess them through to completion. In achieving reprocessing the triggers no longer stimulate the need to use or act out and the new response becomes the positive treatment goal of coping and functioning successfully in life as determined by the client.

Course Objectives

Through lecture, discussion, video clips, and practicum experiences, participants will be able to:

1.  Summarize the use of the DeTUR protocol.
2.  Demonstrate each step of the protocol to uncover core traumas and reprocess them to completion.
3.  Identify at least one rapid technique to aid clients in accessing their own inner resources.
4.  Contrast at least one difference between positive goal (PG) and positive state (PS).
5.  Identify what constitutes a client’s triggers.
6.  Demonstrate at least one method to elicit the client’s positive goal.
7.  Recall how to anchor the positive state into the client’s philosophy.
8.  Analyze how to segue from the DeTUR protocol to the EMDR model.
9.  Identify at least one technique to aid client in handling relapse.
