After years of working in therapy or families, individuals, and children, Dr. Gottlieb discovered EMDR in 2000. She soon completed her EMDR Certification and began using EMDR therapy within her practice. The rapid and positive results she saw with her clients created an urgency to go further with EMDR therapy.

Dr. Gottlieb’s private practice is in Fullerton, California, where she specializes in complex trauma and chronic pain/illness. She also holds an adjunct faculty position in the Graduate program for the Department of Counseling at California State University, Fullerton.

Michelle is the author of the book Balance and Change (2004) and writes an ongoing column for The Fullerton Observer, by the same title. She co-hosts the EMDR Chat podcast and has co-published the article, “Reducing the Cost of Caring: Indirect Trauma Exposure on Mental Health Providers” (2023).

If anyone is passionate about EMDR therapy, Michelle is, and she’s passionate about teaching it to other clinicians. Participants who have been trained by Dr. Gottlieb often comment that she makes complex material easy to understand and apply with a special talent for creating a light and enjoyable environment for learning.

Course Description, Learning Objectives, Schedule

Program Abstract/ Program Description

Advanced course helping EMDR clinicians navigate decisions between symptom reduction and comprehensive treatment. Participants learn to assess client needs, goals, stability, and treatment timelines while considering developmental and cultural factors. Gain practical strategies to collaborate with clients and choose effective, individualized treatment approaches that balance immediate relief with long-term healing outcomes.

Course Abstract:

Clients often enter therapy seeking relief, while clinicians may feel pulled to address the full complexity of a client’s life history. This course explores that central tension—when to focus on immediate symptom reduction and when to pursue more comprehensive, in-depth treatment.

Designed for EMDR clinicians, this workshop provides practical guidance for making thoughtful, client-centered treatment planning decisions. Participants will learn how to evaluate key factors such as treatment duration, client stability, developmental stage, and therapeutic goals. The course also offers strategies for collaborating with clients to align treatment approaches with their needs, readiness, and cultural context.

By the end of the course, clinicians will feel more confident choosing and implementing the most appropriate treatment pathway—balancing effectiveness, safety, and long-term healing for each unique client.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify at least two clinical criteria used to determine when to pursue symptom reduction versus comprehensive treatment in EMDR therapy.

  2. Describe at least two appropriate EMDR protocol options (e.g., Standard Protocol, EMD, Early Intervention, Reverse Protocol) for a given client scenario, adapting treatment approaches based on client factors such as age, culture, and clinical presentation.
