Building Lasting Readiness: Integrating DBT Skills and Transactional Analysis into EMDR Therapy Preparation
Live, Virtual Workshop
presented by Kelly Hurley, LPC
Friday, December 5, 2025
Kelly Hurley, LPC is a Counselor in private practice in Phoenix, AZ. She started her career in the mental health field in 2003. Kelly was trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) working with highly suicidal and self-harming clients. She completed a one-year study/experience program in DBT in 2005. In 2008 she attended a 2-week Behavioral Tech, LLC Intensive DBT Training with Dr. Marsha Linehan's training organization. She worked in community mental health settings & participated in DBT Consultation Teams for 14 years, leading them for 8 of those years. Kelly is a Clinical Supervisor in Arizona and led the training program at her agency. She has trained & supervised many clinicians in DBT.
Kelly realized during her work with people with Borderline Personality Disorder that training in the treatment of Complex PTSD / Trauma was needed in order to help her clients use DBT skills and fully create a "life worth living." She was trained in EMDR Therapy in 2009 and has used that ever since. She worked in community mental health for 14 years prior to starting her private practice in 2017; she is a Clinical Supervisor and loves mentoring others. Kelly is an EMDRIA Certified Therapist, an EMDRIA Approved Consultant, and EMDR Approved Trainer for EMDR Professional Training in both basic and advanced courses. She also provides Facilitation for EMDR-HAP Trainings. Kelly specializes in working with clients who dissociate, experience OCD and panic. She also is trained in DeTUR and Feeling State Addiction Protocol (FSAP)—as well as other advanced trainings.

Program Abstract/ Program Description
A common challenge in EMDR Therapy is preparing clients with complex trauma, dissociation, or high emotional reactivity to safely enter reprocessing. Without adequate stabilization, clients may struggle with avoidance, flooding, or premature dropout. This training addresses that challenge by teaching EMDR therapists how to actively incorporate Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills and Transactional Analysis (TA) concepts into Phases 1 and 2, ensuring readiness for the reprocessing phases (3–6).
Participants will learn how to teach and coach DBT skills in individual therapy sessions, with specific attention to how each skill supports EMDR preparation. Instruction will cover the four DBT skills modules—Core Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Distress Tolerance, and Interpersonal Effectiveness—as well as general skills of Chain Analysis, Behavioral Analysis, and Transactional Analysis. Practical demonstrations, references to DBT handouts & worksheets, and clinical examples will highlight ways to introduce, practice, and reinforce these skills within the EMDR framework, equipping clinicians to scaffold clients’ growth between sessions and increase their capacity for self-regulation during trauma reprocessing.
Transactional Analysis (TA) will be emphasized as a valuable tool for identifying ego states, communication patterns, and recurring relational scripts that often surface in trauma survivors. By integrating TA concepts in preparation phases, therapists can help clients develop awareness of maladaptive patterns, strengthen the Adult ego state for processing, and reduce relational triggers that may destabilize EMDR work.
For example, mindfulness practices will be taught as essential tools for dual awareness and grounding, while emotion regulation and distress tolerance skills will be demonstrated as methods to reduce avoidance, manage triggers, and strengthen the client’s ability to stay engaged in the AIP process. Interpersonal effectiveness and TA-informed insights will be applied to improve therapeutic alliance, empower clients in external relationships, and interrupt maladaptive relational scripts that could undermine treatment progress. These Interpersonal Effectiveness skills will also be used to compare and contrast with trauma events that happened in early childhood to help Child Parts know the difference between healthy & unhealthy interactions.
Research supports the efficacy of DBT in stabilizing clients with high emotional vulnerability, while TA continues to offer practical, evidence-informed frameworks for improving communication and reducing dysfunctional interactional patterns. Combined with EMDR Therapy’s strong research base for trauma resolution, this integrative approach enhances both stabilization and readiness for adaptive processing.
By the end of this training, participants will have a clear framework, practical tools, and greater confidence in preparing clients for safe and effective EMDR trauma reprocessing.
