Course Description, Learning Objectives, Schedule

Program Abstract/ Program Description

This is a hands-on workshop, the purpose of which is for participants to leave with the competence and confidence to utilize parts/ego state work within a trauma-informed approach. This applies to both those new to the use of parts work, as well as those wishing to hone their existing skills.

Day One reviews common characteristics of various traditions of parts/ego state work, including Internal Family System, Structural Dissociation and Watkin’s Ego State therapy. Recognition of indicators that reveal that a part is asking for attention follows, along with the demonstration and practice of creating a “meeting place.” The major part of the day covers the essential, relational skills in working with parts. These skills include recognition of and contact with parts, understanding their motivation and developing new goals and a collaborative relationship with parts. The acronym RUG-C summarizes the four major elements or skills in this approach (recognition, understanding, gratitude/goals, collaboration).

Day Two begins with a review and practice of Day One material, then focuses on two problematic “scenarios” encountered in parts work, how to recognize them and how to deal with them. These are (1) the blame game or internal blame among parts and (2) working with stuck or hindering parts.  Attention is finally given to the development of resources, both external and internal, as well as the importance of maintaining dual awareness as a way of preventing the client’s here-and-now consciousness from being taken over by individual parts.

Both days of the workshop emphasize where awareness and strategies of parts work fit into a trauma-informed phase model. Learning takes place through lecture, live demonstration, video clips and practice. Participants are encouraged at all times to maintain an awareness of any of their own dissociative tendencies and to remember self-care.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify three major approaches that explain ego state phenomena.
  2. Describe the four major relational steps in RUG-C.
  3. Identify the presence of ego states via at least three indicators.
  4. Describe the "meeting place" to contact parts and assess their needs.
  5. Identify one instance in which the therapist needs to speak directly to a part, rather than through the client.
  6. Describe two scenarios that complicate and, potentially, interfere with parts work.
  7. Explain the intention of the "empty chair" strategy in parts work.
  8. Describe three places where a parts/ego state approach fits into the EMDR phase model.
