Our students say it best.

“As a clinical psychologist who works closely with physicians in medical and forensive settings, and the guardian of a family member who has a history of SMI, I found this whole area highly thought provoking and helpful-- especially in exploring non-medication trauma informed approaches to the problem of psychosis. I have always valued the work of Eugene Bleuler and am thankful that his work has been "rediscovered" in this contemporary field of discovery. The presentation was clear and refreshingly "light hearted" and informal. Thank you so much.”

“Really Neat! I enjoyed this course. Informative and really makes one reconsider psychosis and underlying causes.”

Course Description, Learning Objectives, Schedule

Program Abstract/ Program Description

Recent research has challenged the longstanding belief that EMDR therapy is ineffective or potentially harmful for individuals experiencing both PTSD and psychosis. Emerging evidence now supports the use of EMDR therapy in this population, demonstrating its potential to reduce trauma-related distress and improve overall functioning.

Unveiling Psychosis:  EMDR Therapy for Trauma and Healing is an advanced training exploring current research on the effective application of EMDR therapy in treating psychosis, highlighting interventions that help minimize the impact of trauma in individuals with psychotic symptoms. Training will focus on the EMDR Therapy 8-Phase Standard Protocol and how/when it can be adapted to working with clients with psychosis.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model in the context of psychosis, highlighting the role of unprocessed trauma in the development and persistence of psychotic symptoms.
  2. Describe how to gather and analyze detailed information about a client’s psychotic symptoms to inform EMDR therapy treatment planning while maintaining a trauma-informed approach.
  3. Identify at least one appropriate EMDR therapy interventions based on the client’s level of functioning, symptom severity, and overall treatment goals.
  4. Recognize when a client with psychosis is ready for reprocessing and implement strategies to facilitate readiness while ensuring stability and safety.
  5. Distinguish between the use of Eye Movement Desensitization (EMD) and the 8-phase Standard Protocol to tailor treatment to the client’s needs and assess progress throughout the therapy process.
  6. Identify at least one appropriate EMDR therapy intervention and potential modifications based upon the client's culture and its interface with their symptoms.
