Course Description, Learning Objectives, Schedule

Program Abstract/ Program Description

This one-day training focuses on how Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) can support EMDR Therapy, allowing a client’s internal system support the healing process.  This introductory training provides practical strategies for incorporating IFS into EMDR Therapy. The course will cover the basic tenets and concepts of IFS as well as the how and where in EMDR these interventions can interconnect. The course focuses on 3 phases of EMDR:  History Taking, Preparation and Desensitization.  In Phase 1, History Taking, participants explore how to incorporate IFS language and concepts into the initial stages of therapy. In Phase 2, Preparation, participants identify how to assist clients to understand and befriend their protective parts. These protective parts play an integral role when processing traumatic memories. In Phase 4, Desensitization, the training outlines specific IFS interweaves that supports the reconsolidation of memories more effectively.  Through didactic, demonstration, and practice sessions, participants experience their own internal system and gain skills in working with their clients’ systems.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize the basic constructs of IFS, including Protectors, Exiles, Self Energy, and the roles of Manager and Firefighter Parts.
  2. Describe at least one skill to support Self Energy and one method to map a client’s internal system using IFS concepts.
  3. Identify strategies to incorporate IFS into EMDR Therapy, including recognizing therapist parts and using cognitive interweaves.
  4. Distinguish steps to assist clients in identifying, understanding, and befriending their protective parts during EMDR phases.
