Program Abstract/ Program Description
Advanced training for EMDR therapy in community mental health settings. Addresses the challenges of complex, under-resourced systems and clients’ environmental instability. Explores concrete strategies for therapists to navigate institutional roadblocks, advocate for EMDR therapy within community health organizations, sustain themselves as clinicians, and deliver quality trauma care to underserved populations.
Course Abstract:
Community mental health settings offer EMDR practitioners the opportunity to engage in truly meaningful work. However, systemic barriers, high caseloads, socioeconomic hardship, and under-resourced agencies weave together to form a complicated picture. This training equips practitioners with the practical knowledge and strategic tools to deliver quality EMDR therapy within these constraints, without sacrificing clinical integrity or their own wellbeing.
By the end of this training, attendees will be able to identify and navigate common systemic and institutional barriers to practicing EMDR therapy in community mental health settings. Participants will develop concrete strategies for managing clients’ environmental instability effectively. Practitioners will cultivate approaches to balance high case loads and select clients strategically. Various strategies will be reviewed to practice EMDR therapy with cultural competence and humility. Finally, practitioners will cultivate approaches to clinician sustainability that protect against burnout and compassion fatigue in high-demand settings.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
2. Describe at least one intervention to deliver EMDR therapy successfully even as a client may be experiencing environmental instability such as housing insecurity.
3. Recall at least one strategy to effectively select which clients to engage in EMDR therapy while managing a high case load.
4. Identify at least one intervention they can implement to promote own wellness and inoculate against burnout.
